This investigation assessed the efficacy of a biobehavioral intervention in the adjunctive treatment of mild pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), a potentially serious complication of pregnancy in which normotensive women develop hypertension, proteinuria, and edema of unknown etiology late in gestation. Forty-five women with symptoms of PIH were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: bed rest alone (the most common obstetrical treatment), bed rest with individualized compliance enhancement training, or a four-session biobehavioral treatment consisting of bed rest, compliance enhancement training, and individualized thermal biofeedback-assisted relaxation training. Results indicated that while blood pressure for the bed rest and compliance enhancement groups continued to rise and pose an increasing health risk to maternal and fetal well-being, subjects in the biobehavioral group maintained their blood pressure at a significantly lower, and presumably safer, level. The biobehavioral treatment is hypothesized to affect blood pressure levels in subjects with mild PIH through the mediation of the sympathetic nervous system, decreasing peripheral vascular resistance and cardiac output. The results of this investigation suggest that the biobehavioral intervention may be an effective adjunct to bed rest in the treatment of mild PIH remote from term.  相似文献

Specific activities of hemicellulose-degrading polysaccharide depolymerase and glycoside hydrolase enzymes were measured in batch and continuous cultures of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens NCDO 2249 grown on cellobiose or a hemicellulosic carbohydrate. Enzyme activities were influenced by the growth substrate and by the rate and stage of growth of the micro-organism. In cellobiose batch cultures specific activities were maximal as the growth rate declined and in the initial stages of the stationary phase. The growth substrate did not affect the range of glycoside hydrolases formed, although specific activities were substrate-dependent, with activity increases (up to 200-fold) occurring in enzymes essential for effective substrate utilization. Appreciable xylanase activity was present only in xylan-grown cultures. The substrate effects were also evident in chemostat cultures. The activity response of the nine enzymes monitored to growth rate changes differed in that while the activity of some enzymes, including xylanase, declined at high dilution rates the activities of others were not growth rate-dependent and were maintained over the range of dilution rates examined. Exocellular activities were detected only in spent media from cultures grown with a polymeric (hemicellulosic) carbohydrate.  相似文献

The general problem scenario of this paper is the following: Jobs of various priorities, stationed in a common storage area, are waiting to be dispatched to two non-identical workstations. Any of the waiting jobs can be accessed from the storage at any given time. Each job can be processed on either of the workstations, but once a job has been assigned it may not be preempted. By job priority it is meant that a higher priority job has disptach preference over a lower priority job. The processing time of a job on a given workstation is assumed to be random, the distribution being dependent on the job type and the configuration of the workstation. Specifically, the first problem studied considers only two classes of jobs: (1) “hot” jobs, whose processing is to be expedited and thus have the higher dispatch priority, and (2) “routine” jobs which may be assigned to an available workstation only if the workstation has been rejected by all “hot” jobs. The processing times are assumed to be exponentially distributed with means depending on the job class and workstation. We assume that, on the average, one workstation is faster than the other with regard to processing any job. The dispatching objective for each job class is to minimize its expected flowtime. It is shown that threshold dispatching policies are optimal for this problem. That is, the faster processor should be utilized whenever possible, and for each class there exists an explicit threshold such that when the number of jobs of that class in the buffer exceeds this threshold then a job of that class is dispatched to the slower processor, otherwise these jobs wait for the faster processor to become available. For the higher priority jobs, this threshold is shown to be a function only of the various processing rates of the two workstations. For the lower priority jobs, the threshold also depends on the number of higher priority jobs in the buffer. The results is extended to a system with n priority classes. Again, it is shown that when the processing times are exponentially distributed with different rates and the dispatching objective for each class is to minimize its expected flowtime, the optimal dispatching policies are of threshold type. We have developed several strain-specific, rapid, small-scale plasmid isolation procedures in order to characterize the plasmid profiles of 16 filamentous, nonheterocstous cyanobacteria. At least one distinct plasmid was found in eight strains, with seven of these containing two or more different plasmids. Eight strains were found to be without plasmid DNA. Both the large, 12.9 kb, and the small, 1.6 kb, plasmids fromPlectonema boryanum 581 were isolated, purified, and cloned. Southern blots of plasmid DNAs from the eight strains were probed with these cloned DNAs and also with ultra-pure plasmid DNA fromPhormidium liridum 426. Four strains ofP. boryanum (485, 581, 594, 1542) andP. luridum 426 have identical plasmid profiles, and plasmid homology is extensive.  相似文献

Abstract Glycerol-stabilised cell extracts of Streptomyces clavuligerus contain an enzyme activity which synthesises ACV from the individual amino acids L -α-aminoadipic acid, L -cysteine and L -valine. Enzyme activity was optimum in reaction mixtures containing 1 mM ATP together with an ATP regenerating system. The ACV synthetase enzyme formed ACV analogs when provided with L - carboxymethylcysteine in place of L -α-aminoadipic acid or when provided with L - allo isoleucine or L -α-aminobutyrate in place of L -valine. Multistep conversion of individual amino acids to penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics was restricted as a result of the inhibitory effects of L -α-aminoadipic acid and L -cysteine on isopenicillin N synthetase.  相似文献

Summary Anaerobic microbial communities sampled from either a methanogenic or sulfate-reducing aquifer site have been tested for their ability to degrade a variety of groundwater pollutants, including halogenated aromatic compounds, simple alkyl phenols and tetrachloroethylene. The haloaromatic chemicals were biodegraded in methanogenic incubations but not under sulfate-reducing conditions. The primary degradative event was typically the reductive removal of the aryl halides. Complete dehalogenation of the aromatic moiety was required before substrate mineralization was observed. The lack of dehalogenation activity in sulfatereducing incubations was due, at least in part, to the high levels of sulfate rather than a lack of metabolic potential. In contrast, the degradation of cresol isomers occurred in both types of incubations but proved faster under sulfate-reducing conditions. The requisite microorganisms were enriched and the degradation pathway forp-cresol under the latter conditions involved the anaerobic oxidation of the aryl methyl group. Tetrachloroethylene was also degraded by reductive dehalogenation but under both incubation conditions. The initial conversion of this substrate to trichloroethylene was generally faster under methanogenic conditions. However, the transformation pathway slowed when dichloroethylene was produced and only trace concentrations of vinyl chloride were detected. These results illustrate that pollutant compounds can be biodegraded under anoxic conditions and a knowledge of the predominant ecological conditions is essential for accurate predictions of the transport and fate of such materials in aquifers.  相似文献

Rhizobium trifolii 0403 was treated with 16.6 mM succinate and other nutrients and thereby induced to grow in nitrogen-free medium. The organism grew microaerophilically on either semisolid or liquid medium, fixing atmospheric nitrogen to meet metabolic needs. Nitrogen fixation was measured via 15N incorporation (18% 15N enrichment in 1.5 doublings) and acetylene reduction. Nitrogen-fixing cells had a Km for acetylene of 0.07 atm (ca. 7.09 kPa), required about 3% oxygen for optimum growth in liquid medium, and showed a maximal specific activity of 5 nmol of acetylene reduced per min per mg of protein at 0.04 atm (ca. 4.05 kPa) of acetylene. The doubling time on N-free liquid medium ranged from 1 to 5 days, depending on oxygen tension, with an optimum temperature for growth of about 30°C. Nodulation of white clover by the cultures showing in vitro nitrogenase activity indicates that at least part of the population maintained identity with wild-type strain 0403.  相似文献
